Prof. Nico Hofmann

Film producer, managing director of UFA Cinema GmbH

After completing an internship at a newspaper, Hofmann studied at the University of TV and Film in Munich and made his cinematic debut with “Land der Väter, Land der Söhne” (Land of the Fathers, Land of the Sons), for which he received the Bavarian Film Award in 1989. His first few episodes for the classic RTL series “Balko”, the courtroom thriller  “Der große Abgang” (The Grand Exit), and the media-critical thriller “Der Sandmann” (The Sandman) starring Götz George were a sensation in the industry and in the 1990s Hofmann became one of Germany’s foremost directors. In 1998, after completing the big-screen thriller “Solo für Klarinette” (Solo for Clarinet), he turned his back on directing to found the production company teamWorx Television & Film GmbH. In the following years, he gained great popular and critical acclaim with event-scale productions and ambitious films like “Wolfsburg”, “Toter Mann” (Dead Man), “Stauffenberg”, “Nicht alle waren Mörder” (They Weren’t All Murderers), “Das Wunder von Berlin” (The Miracle Of Berlin) and “Mogadischu” (Mogadishu Welcome),  and won numerous prizes (incl. German TV Award, Adolf Grimme Awards, and Golden Camera).  Some of Nico Hofmann’s noteworthy productions include “Dresden” as well as the award-winning historic miniseries “Die Flucht” (March of Millions), which was watched by more than 13 million viewers when it was broadcast in March 2007. Among other things, the production won the Audience BAMBI and was named “Best TV Film” at the Shanghai Television Festival, and swept the German TV Awards in three categories.

Nico Hofmann productions that were broadcast or produced in 2008 include the TV film “Mogadischu” (directed by: Roland Suso Richter), which won two Golden Camera awards, about the hijacking of the “Landshut” in October 1977. It stars Thomas Kretschmann, Herbert Knaup, Nadja Uhl, Simon Verhoeven, Saïd Taghmaoui, Christian Berkel and Jürgen Tarrach. Also, the three-part miniseries “Die Patin” (The Godmother) starring Veronica Ferres, and “Vulkan” (Volcano, directed by: Uwe Janson) with Matthias Koeberlin, Katharina Wackernagel, Yvonne Catterfeld, Heiner Lauterbach and Armin Rohde in the leading roles, as well as Katja Riemann, Pasquale Aleardi, Jenny Elvers-Elbertzhagen and Ursula Karven. Recent productions include “Dutschke” (directed by: Stefan Krohmer, script: Daniel Nocke) about the figurehead of Germany’s 68er-Bewegung student movement, the TV film “Helmut Kohl - The Movie”, the eco-drama “Geheimnis der Wale” (Mystery Of The Whales) starring Veronica Ferres, the political thriller “Die Grenze” (The Border) and the telenovela “Alisa – Folge Deinem Herzen” (Follow Your Heart). Upcoming productions include “Grzimek”, “Laconia”, “Vom Glück nur ein Schatten” (A Mere Shadow Of Happiness) and “Hindenburg”.

Nico Hofmann has won numerous awards for his achievements as a producer and director. He won the 2006 Hans Abich Prize for special services rendered to the TV film genre, and received the Bavarian TV Award for his work as a producer on “Dresden”, “Die Sturmflut” (The Storm Tide) and “Die Luftbrücke” (The Airlift). In 2007, he was also presented with the City of Mannheim’s Schillerpreis and the ROMY for “Best Producer”. In 2009, the German state of Baden-Württemberg bestowed its Medal of Merit on him. 

In spring 2008, he was appointed to the management board of the newly formed UFA Cinema. Nico Hofmann is producer of "Hanni & Nanni/ The O´Sullivan Twins", "Tauben auf dem Dach (AT)/ Two in the Bush (WT)", "Teufelskicker/ Devils Kickers" and "Dschungelkind/ Jungle Child".

With the revival of the UFA brand as one of the world’s most famous and historic brands in cinema production Bertelsmann, RTL Group and FremantleMedia are sending a clear signal about the continued importance of cinema in the digital age.
